Theo de Raadt: “I cannot recommend the purchase of any machines based on the Intel Core 2…”

Intel recently released some BIOS updates for the Intel Core 2 processors which were surprisingly sparse on details. Theo de Raadt (of OpenBSD fame) dug in and discovered that he estimates 20 to 30 bugs are now discovered in the Intel Core 2 that are potentially not patchable and potentially exploitable from userland code to take over the processor for malicious activities. (Personally, I’d have thought they could microcode some updates, but I haven’t looked into it too closely). Maybe it’s high time to just hypervisor everything to avoid these bugs?

Read about it here.
