In a press release that could have been an April Fool’s Day joke that Hell has frozen over, EMI has recognised that sales DRM free music is the better way to go and is now offering higher fidelity music DRM free at $1.29 vs $0.99 at the iTunes Music Store. Existing users can upgrade their old music for an extra $0.30 to the DRM free version, in a surprise move which shows they are serious about the fact you license the music + pay for the cost of the download, without having to relicense what you’ve bought already. EMI still supports DRM for various distribution models such as subscription services and time-limited downloads or rentals which is reasonable enough.
