The War on Rationality

My cat is getting fledgling birds

Sigh. I guess it had to happen sooner or later, our local family cat has started finding the local fledgling birds that have started to hop around the area and bringing them back home to play/hunt with. Yesterday, we found a live one that he brought in which we put outside again to hopefully hop off somewhere, somehow he found it again and that time it didn’t make it. Today, we found another live one which he brought in. I guess we’re lucky he doesn’t eat them on the spot (though, he has been known to do this) but the question remains about what to do with the live fledgling afterwards while fending the cat off.

I moved it to my back yard after consulting guides online, unfortunately I can’t put it back out where we think it’d be from as I’ve trained my cat to roam around and he’s got a pretty wide range, not to mention there’s about 2 to 3 other cats that overlap the same parts of territory so I’d say the chances of this fledgling bird surviving out the front are pretty low if it’s on the ground. My back yard isn’t 100% cat safe either, but off the ground hopefully this fledgling will have some luck in attracting the birds passing overhead to figure out where it is.

I guess I’ll find out tomorrow.

Full fat milk makes you thinner?

According to researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute having tracked almost 20,000 women over 10 years they believe that daily milk with the full fat content promotes calcium uptake that leads to a reduction in obesity by 15%. Having full fat cheese daily reduces obesity by 30%. Be interesting to see what everyone makes of it, since the world’s on a fat free fad at the moment.

Blame! CG movie?

OK, I’ll admit it: I’m a big fan of Tsutomu Nihei’s Blame! manga (or rather, Blam!) which details a desolate Earth that has been consumed by an ever-expanding city which acts as infrastructure to the mythical NetSphere, a completely computer driven alternative world. Just one slight problem - after the rise of infected cyborgs known as silicon creatures the NetSphere invoked their autonomous defense system, known as the SafeGuard to protect them by terminating all humans without Net Terminal Genes (who were able to be infected and converted into silicon creatures).

As a result, nobody left alive has the ability to communicate directly to the NetSphere to halt the expansion as almost all communication has ceased between the real world and the NetSphere. A roaming agent known as Killy is requested to find any remaining person with Net Terminal Genes to try and stop the uncontrolled growth of the city. Several other manga exist such as prequels (NOiSE, Biomega) and sequels (NetSphere Engineer) and one-shots (DigiMortal) that drop hints about the world of Blame!

What’s interesting is that life is cheap in Blame! as most people no longer have truly human bodies and can be turned into a digital persona with ease, extending their lives well past what you’d expect. Time also takes on new dimensions as regularly days or years pass getting from A to B or for a variety of other reasons. Effectively life has ground to a halt as survivors are effectively left between the iron age and limited information age eras struggling to survive without input from the NetSphere.

I missed it earlier, but it appears that Jinni’s Animation Studio have taken on a Blame! CG movie with Production IG. A Prologue DVD with about 3 minutes of footage + statuette of Killy costs about $63 Au (argh, 35c/second?) has recently come out that gives more hints about the upcoming CG movie release.

See it here, French.

By the looks of things it’ll be close to the end of the manga if the statuette of Sanakan is to be believed, what with her arm-fused GBE and wings when she took out an army of silicon creatures to save Killy’s friend, Cibo. Hopefully we’ll get to see some serious silicon creature ass-kicking from both Killy and Sanakan along the way.

Dororo: Pinocchio meets Frankenstein in Feudal Japanese Samurai Saga

I recently got the chance to watch the first (of three?) live action movies called Dororo. Let’s just say it’s a odd fusion of story elements from well known samurai dramas, Pinocchio and Frankenstein and probably a few more given the number of subtle (and not quite so subtle) clichés spread throughout the movie. That, and it was originally written by the God of Manga himself, Tezuka Osamu as “Dororo and Hyakkimaru”.

Tsumabuki Satoshi stars as Hyakkimaru, who at birth was born without 48 body parts thanks to a bit of prenatal wheeling and dealing by his father, the (now) evil Kagemitsu Daigo to 48 demons in exchange for the power to rule the world. After being rescued from drowning in a river by a learned sorcerer and given immortal replacement body parts like Frankenstein (but much more successfully), he sets off after the demons after the death of his adopted father/sorcerer and burning down his house (yes, this is a samurai drama after all). This is all relayed by a blind minstrel to the other main character below (yes, another cliché) who gave him his first sword.

On the way he meets a female petty thief (singer Shibasaki Kou) who sees him dispatching one of the demons and decides to stick around Hyakkimaru to steal his Hyakkimaru sword that’s embedded in his left arm once he regains his true left arm. Hyakkimaru names her Dororo and he lets her stick around as demon bait or to distract demons despite her constant scowling, tomboyish behaviour and generally being a nuisance. In general, she acts as a comic foil to Hyakkimaru who’s pretty taciturn given he has no eyes, ears or voice (he uses psychic powers as substitutes).

As the movie progresses and the demon count clicks up more clichés are wielded (yes, the guy-in-a-suit-from-sentai-action-series is in there) Hyakkimaru and Dororo discover that it is indeed Hyakkimaru’s father who gave away his body parts and Hyakkimaru vows to take revenge, even after Dororo admits that she wants to kill Kagemitsu and forfeits her revenge to futilely convince Hyakkimaru to stop patricide.

Ironically the battles become more and more dangerous as Hyakkimaru forfeits his immortal limbs for his true ones which he can get injured by, so I expect by the 48th demon Hyakkimaru would be quite hard pressed to stay alive (though, they don’t get to that number thankfully, they have another 12 demons per film to handle).

In any case it’s worth watching if you have a interest in these sorts of films and don’t mind seeing a mismash of different styles for the demons and having clichés thrown left right and center (that is, if you recognise them). I’ll be looking forward to Dororo 2 and 3 when they come out, that’s for sure.

Web site here, Japanese. Google is probably your friend for more information.

As a side note, originally Dororo was a young boy, some have criticised Shibasaki Kou for her role as the newly recast Dororo however I feel having seen the film it’s an apt choice, she’s able to pull off the scowling tomboyish Dororo quite well and is definitely going to be pivotal in more ways than one in the sequels. Also - according to Tzuka Osamu, Dororo is a word play on Dorobo (thief) that he heard a child use once.

T-Mobile Germany leaks EU iPhone with 3G?

T-Mobile Germany may have let the cat out of the bag with a leaked ad that promises a 3G iPhone with 3G + HSDPA and 16 GB of storage for €499 (about $830 AU) on November 12. This will certainly peeve the US what with only EDGE support and the recent $200 US price drop…
