Saw a pretty good Cutting Edge documentary about how the leader of the Republicans, Tom DeLay was aiding and abetting the acquisition of 5 seats in the Senate by stealing them from the Democrats. How he did this was by channelling illegal corporation donations to the White House, then sending back “clean” donations through a few front businesses to help out his compadres in Texas. He also forced an early re-evaluation of the voting areas to maximise Republican chances for winning.
With these changes he was able to win 5 extra seats and swing USA over to Republican majority to assist Bush in his presidential duties over the last few years. Most of his co-conspiritors have pleaded guilty to the charges and are serving jail; Tom DeLay himself was forced out of politics altogether after Texas DA’s nailed them to the wall with a trial by jury.
Goes to show that even the highest ranks of Government can’t get away with crimes once the will and passion to investigate is there. As from V for Vendetta, “People should not be afraid of their governments. The governments should be afraid of their people.”
