PlayStation 3 - Disassembled Already

You knew it had to happen inevitably, someone with too much money and time on their hands has posted up pictures of the PS3 disassembled for the world to see despite it only being released for less than a day at best in Japan. Interestingly enough, looks like they bit the bullet and put in the original EE+GS from the PlayStation 2 in, wouldn’t surprise me if the IOP is still kicking around at that rate too to support PlayStation 1 software as well. No wonder it’s so damn expensive!

Get your photos here.

Eventually they’ll probably be able to jettison the EE+GS and IOP once their emulation technology gets up to scratch, so you could probably save about $100 on the cost of the console from that alone and more once economies of scale kick in and get some die shrinks in. As it stands, just thinking about it you have 3 CPU’s in the box, 3 Graphics chips, 2 Vector Units + 1 FPU Co-Processor for the EE, and probably quite a few other accessory bits of silicon to handle DMA, graphics, interrupts and whatever else. Who said programming the Sega Saturn was hard?
